Geocaching is an active outdoor hobby that appeals to a sense of adventure and brings out the treasure hunter in everyone! Participate at your own speed and mobility level. Learn how to use GPS to search for caches, log finds, and pursue rewards and goals. Use your new skills to participate in the library’s Adult Summer Reading Club Geocaching Challenge to earn a 90th anniversary commemorative path tag. Registration is not required.

Tween Read-in Challenge @ Southwest Arlington Branch
Jun 19 @ 12:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Calling all 4th – 6th graders! Are you up for the challenge? Find out at the library’s Read-in. Bring your favorite books/magazines or pick something good here and read, read, read for the five whole hours! Students that complete the five hours will be awarded a prize. Registration starts at 12 p.m. with the event beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Pre-registration is not required.

Math and Science Camp for Tweens @ George W. Hawkes Central Library Community Room

Math and Science Camp is a summer program where 4th-6th grade students will learn from creative, interactive math and science experiments. This year’s program will be held Monday-Thursday from 3-4:30 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: each camp is limited to 20 participants so registration is required. Students who are registered need to attend all four sessions. Parents do not need to bring additional items. Parents will need to show up at 2:30 p.m. on the first day of the camp to fill out a short intake form.

Registration is required. Registration will open on June 10, 2013.

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the doors of Arlington Life Shelter?

Please join us for a Tour of Help & Hope!

Tours of Help & Hope include:

  • The opportunity for you to learn more about homelessness in our community, its causes, what it takes to bring people back to self-sufficiency through individualized assistance, and the difference you make;
  • Go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the shelter, learning about nightly operations and the culture of hope supporters like you help create;
  • Personally meet with people whose lives have been changed through support of the shelter by people like you;
  • Enjoy a light lunch with shelter staff, including Executive Director Becky Orander, MSW;
  • Ask questions, gain insight, offer ideas, and share the joy of bringing all of our citizens back to self-sufficiency!

UT Arlington presents free outdoor movies on Thursdays at 9 p.m. beginning on June 6 from the west lawn of the Maverick Activities Center (500 W. Nedderman Drive). Students, faculty/staff, alumni and community members are welcomed. Free admission and popcorn while supplies last; soft drinks and concessions for sale. Lawn seating; bring a blanket or chair. Children under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Active Joes @ George W. Hawkes Central Library Community Room

Active Joes is a series of twelve sessions that focus on fitness-related topics. A portion of each class is dedicated to running to prepare our Active Joes for the culminating event – Book It for Literacy 5K/Mile Fun Run! The final class will take place at our 4th annual Book It for Literacy 5K/Mile Fun Run on Saturday, August 3, at River Legacy Park. Active Joes will receive a special race t-shirt and participation medal.

This program is designed for 3rd through 5th grade boys. Active Joes will meet Mondays and Wednesdays 6-7:30 p.m. starting June 24 in the Community Room of the Central Library.

Note: All participating students must complete a client intake form and student waiver at registration. Students must come to class prepared to run; sneakers are required.

TVC – Work It! @ Southeast @ Southeast Arlington Branch

Tweens and teens in grades 4-12 are encouraged to help the library while earning volunteer hours. This time can be used by school, clubs, or college applications. Youth who attend the entire three hour session are eligible to receive up to $5 in fine forgiveness on their personal account.

All participants are encouraged to attend, bring friends, and stay for the entire Work It program!

April will join us live from her home on the West Coast to talk about life as a writer, how and why she started writing, and will take time to answer some of your questions about writing.

People with high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, who snore or feel tired during the day will all benefit from what will be presented.
