Division Corridor Strategy Public Hearing
City Council will get an opportunity to hear additional public input on the Division Street Corridor Strategy at Tuesday evening’s council meeting before taking their first vote on an ordinance to adopt the plan. The hearing caps off months of meetings, surveys and open houses through which property owners, residents and other stakeholders worked with city planners to develop a strategy for Division.
Discover Division is dedicated to creating an economically viable, safe and attractive corridor, building on its historical base with a diverse mix of stable business supported through close associations of property and business owners.
The goals for this strategy are to build on past work and to get dirt moving and projects off the ground. This strategy does not seek to rely heavily on capital improvement projects with little return on public investment. Rather, the strategy seeks to identify current market-based opportunities that can be implemented in the short-term. The strategy aims to address visual clutter, promote walkable places, maintain vital thoroughfare movement and create places for businesses to thrive.

The mayor never asked if there were any cards. He never asked if there was anyone that wanted to speak. I know there was at least one [nonspeaker] card. He just wanted to vote on the strategy.

This was one of the strangest public hearings. There were no comments at all. No staff statements. No consultant statements. No citizen comments. The council just voted to approve and moved on. This seems to give the appearance that this was just a waste of taxpayer dollars.

The public hearing was open to any Arlington resident interested in speaking before Council. Many interested individuals have already shared input throughout the process at various meetings and open houses about Discover Division. The most recent staff presentation on the Division Street Corridor Strategy was made during the afternoon session on September 18 and discussed by council during that time. A link to the presentation may be found in the article above.

I spent my summer working at the Farmers Market near Grease Monkey at Front and Elm St. The proposal there is for student housing/businesses, but with the loud, spewing polluting trains relentlesssly coming through so close, and with the upholstry/automotive shop at Elm….the sounds and smells are not condusive to living in that area… the only thing that makes sense is a loud, disco with good air filtration systems. We need to build upon the street nightlife for the UTA students and that location is not suitable to student living.

How about extending this west all the way to Bowen and Crowley. That part of Division desperately needs beautification too. Thank you.
