Traffic Enforcement Encourages Drivers to Slow Down

Arlington’s finest were out in force today targeting aggressive speeders in South Arlington along the Interstate 20 corridor.

Speeding is a major contributing factor in crashes, including fatalities. Traffic safety is of the utmost concern as our city experienced a very high number of traffic fatalities in 2011. Changing driving behavior through education and enforcement is key to slowing drivers down and reducing the frequency of crashes.

This morning, APD Motor Officers worked a special operation which resulted in 43 traffic stops over a two hour period. The highest speed yielded a whopping 121 mph violation in an area where the posted speed limit is 60 mph.

The APD Motorcycle Unit consists of 16 Motor Officers and 2 Motor Sergeants. Obeying traffic laws will ensure the safe and expeditious flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

  1. Speeding may contribute to accidents but doing radar and pulling people over at rush hour causes people to hit their brakes and causes potention accidents. Also significant fuel is wasted by drivers having to slow down to around 40-45 mph everytime there is a person pulled over, this seems to be what everyone slows down to as they pass the pulled over car. The safest thing at rush hour is to let people go with the flow. I have almost been rear ended more that once going home from work on 20 because of police caused traffic slow downs.

I got a ticket on 20 for 80 in the 60 on a non busy weekend day a month ago. Oh well my fault and was not even mad. However when I see radar during rush hour it is not good.

  2. If you were one of the 43 stopped you were speeding. If they were just trying to fill a quota dont you think they could have gotten more than 43 speeders in 2 hours?

  3. This was just a ploy to meet their quota, I was stopped n was not speeding!!!
